What the customer told us
Speedometer pinned at zero and the fuel gauge stuck on empty, so he was tracking miles on the trip odometer to know when to fill up. Two other shops quoted him a new cluster plus programming.
What we found
Gauges swept correctly on key-on self test, which told us the cluster had power and was talking to the network. Scan data showed the PCM reporting correct vehicle speed, so the signal was fine and the problem was inside the cluster itself. That generation of F-150 is known for failing stepper motors behind the gauge faces.
What we did
Pulled the cluster, opened it on the bench, and replaced all six stepper motors plus the burnt-out backlight LEDs. Recalibrated the needles to zero and reinstalled. No programming needed because it is the original cluster, so his mileage stays legally intact.
How it came out
All gauges reading correctly against a scan tool and a GPS check on the road test. Backlighting even across the whole panel again. He paid a little over a third of what the new-cluster quotes were.
Parts fitted
- 6 x stepper motors
- Backlight LEDs
Photos to add: Speedometer and fuel gauge dead on a running engine; Cluster on the bench, back cover off; Old stepper motors next to the replacements; All gauges sweeping correctly after calibration.
